Lady Indians roll past North Platte 56-37 on Blue Out night
The McCook Community College completed a home sweep of Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference opponents with a 56-37 win over North Platte Community College Tuesday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
“The North Platte game is always a fun one. You never know what you’re going to get with a lot of emotions that can run high on both sides, but I thought we played four quarters tonight,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “It wasn’t a great four quarters, we came out a little sluggish in the first quarter but really executed in the second and fourth periods.”
MCC got off to a 9-2 lead in the opening six minutes of the first quarter but the Knights came back with a 7-2 run to close out the quarter up 11-9. The Lady Indians forced 15 first-half turnovers and picked up the pace in the second quarter with a 15-7 advantage, but North Platte picked up momentum in the third quarter, but were out-scored 13-12. MCC closed out the game with a 17-9 fourth quarter edge.
“The goal for us tonight was that North Platte’s starting five does really well scoring like an average of 64 points a game, and I thought we did a nice job holding those five down to 28 points,” Pritchett said. Kala Pope led North Platte with 13 points and seven rebounds.
MCC was held to 11 turnovers Tuesday while forcing 21 from the Knights.
“We have to take care of the ball if we want to be successful,” Pritchett said.
Carla Torrubia Cano (sophomore, Melilla Spain) led MCC with 14 points. She was five-for-six from the field with five rebounds.
“I’ve been really tough on Carla, but she came through tonight and hit four big 3’s,” Pritchett said. It’s fun to watch because she plays so hard and so I was proud and excited for her to find her shot.”
Sophomore Amiya Dartest (Jennings, La.) scored nine points and was two-of-six from the 3-point line. Sophomores Estrella Avalos (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Gail Whiting (sophomore, Montgomery, Ala.) both scored six points. Avalos led MCC with four blocked shots and Whiting led MCC with six rebounds. Ten MCC players scored points.
“We just have to continue to be consistent, we’ve shot the ball well the past two games and 29 percent from the 3-point line tonight.” Pritchet said.
MCC shot 40.7 from the field and made seven of 24 from the arc but just four of 10 free throws.
North Platte shot 24.4 percent from the field, made three of 11 3-pointers (27.3 percent) and 12 of 18 from the foul line (66.7 percent). Both teams had 35 rebounds.
Kala Pope led North Platte with 13 points and seven rebounds.
North Platte goes to 3-9 and 1-2 in the NCCAC.
MCC improves to 7-6 and 3-0 in conference but with three road games left on the NCCAC schedule.
“We’ve done our jobs at home for conference and now we have two big conference games this weekend that we’re going to have to prepare and get after it,” Pritchett said.
This weekend MCC travels to Columbus and Beatrice for games against Central Community College (Saturday at 4 p.m.) and Southeast Community College (Sunday at 2 p.m.).
