MCC women drop 57-50 game to Laramie County


The McCook Community College women’s basketball team lost its second straight home game to open the season, dropping a 57-50 game Saturday against Laramie County Community College.

The Golden Eagles gained a 15-14 first quarter lead, then scored the first four points and went on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 22-16. MCC battled back and sophomore transfer Audra Vine (Thornton, Colo.) hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to pull MCC back to 29-24.

The Lady Indians came from eight points down late in the second half and took a 33-31 lead at the midway point of the third quarter and made it a 4-25 lead with 1:58 remaining in the period.

MCC reclaimed the lead 45-43 with 4:56 left in the game, but Laramie County took charge in the final five minutes enjoying an 18-8 edge in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0 on the year.

MCC shot 29.6 percent for the game, made three of 19 shots from the 3-point line and went 15-for-20 at the line (75 percent). MCC turned the ball over 22 times.

LCCC shot 45.9 percent from the field, went three-for-11 from distance and made 20 of 28 free throws (71.4 percent). The Golden Eagles outrebounded MCC 35-27 and committed 26 turnovers.

Gemma Gruettner Bacoul (sophomore, Berlin, Germany) led MCC in scoring with 15 points. Sophomore Natalie Harmata (Sydney, Australia) chipped in nine points. Sophomore transfer Ebba Zalamans ((Stockhom, Sweden) led MCC with nine rebounds and added eight points.

MCC, 0-2 will be home Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game against Northwest Kansas Technical College.
